Process - Sculptures

Each sculpture I create begins with with real world inspiration and slowly morphs into something eerily recognizable yet slightly unearthly. With ample practice, I embrace the liminal space between the sparkle of an idea and the final form. That sparkle of inspiration is always overshadowed by my subconscious during long hours and days of creating, and displacing natural forms into hard porcelain further changes the context. I have learned to love whatever comes out of the kiln even when it is unexpected or unwanted. The transformations afforded by kiln firings are lessons to lean into, though it may feel counterproductive at times. From eyes, to mind, to hands, to clay, to kiln, the journey of a sculpture is an unpredictable game of telephone. It is best to enjoy the ride.
